Hard Day for Mommy and Joel.....
This morning was horrible, and we are all still recovering! Joel had his doctor's appointment this morning. Rob was supposed to go along, but he ended up having to go to another office today and had to leave early. I knew they were planning on drawing blood, but they also ended up giving him two shots. He weighs 22 lbs, 8 oz., which is less than the visiting nurse said last week. Today they said that the portable scales are not very good, and theirs are more accurate. Anyway, Joel is 29 3/4 inches tall. He is in the 50th percentile for weight, 79th percentile for height, and 98th percentile for head size! (Must be all those brains in there!) He is doing really well and they are pleased with his growth and development. We are also supposed to start giving him whole milk and more "big people" food. I had to buy him a toothbrush because we are to start that as well. Anyway, after his two shots in the office (which he did NOT like at all), we had to go to the lab for blood work to check his iron level and to check for lead poisoning (required by the state because he is on Medicaid right now). The lab techs said they would hold him. Before it was over, three lab techs and a male nurse were holding him down while he screamed hysterically and fought them. They had to try a couple of times, and it finally worked. He was so upset that he turned bright red and was gasping for air. After they were done I held him and rocked him with a bottle before we left the clinic. I was really upset and close to tears myself. The poor baby fell asleep right away and slept through the grocery store on the way home. He is sleeping now and has been out for an hour or more. Hopefully he is having sweet dreams and will forget all about the clinic today. More later....

A Beautiful Day for Wagon Ride...
Joel loves his new wagon! It was such a beautiful day outside today, I decided to take Joel for a walk in his birthday wagon. He LOVED it! The only problem? He doesn't want anything else in the wagon with him! No Elmo, no hat, no nothing! He kept dropping them over the side while we were walking. He was smiling and laughing the whole time! He did much better in the wagon than he did in the stroller the last time. Maybe our walks will go better this way! I hope so....
Birthday Open House....
Joel's birthday weekend wound down with an open house on Sunday afternoon. We had about 25 friends stop by to have cake and ice cream and wish Joel a happy birthday. He LOVED all the attention and was really cooperative and well behaved the whole afternoon. He got more fun presents and got to play with little kids, which doesn't happen very often! Everyone was gone by about 4:30, and Joel crashed about 10 minutes after that for 2 1/2 hours! He was OUT!! This was the last of his birthday celebrations. He had such a wonderful birthday week with so many people who love him. He is one incredibly lucky little boy! (Of course, we are pretty darn lucky, too!) More later....
More birthday!
Joel had a birthday party on Saturday with my side of the family. PawPaw, Grandma, Aunt Lisa, Uncle Jason, Great-Great Uncle John, Great Uncle Ted, Cousin Nick, and Great-Grandma call came to celebrate the big day. Joel was so cute! He took a nice nap before everyone got here, and was ready to party! :0) He was fun with his little cake...he made a big mess and had frosting everywhere! I had to use the nasal aspirator to get the blue frosting out of his nose! He got a lot of nice gifts and spent today pulling them all out and dragging them all over the house. He got a wagon from Grandma and PawPaw and lots of fun books and toys. He'll be busy for a while! He didn't mind being passed around and played for quite a while before finally falling asleep. He is such a good boy and we love him so very much. He may be a "big boy" now, but he will always be Mommy's baby!

Birthday pictures...
We took Joel to the mall tonight for his one-year pictures. He did really, really well. He was smiley and cooperative, thank goodness! The pictures are positively adorable...some of his best yet! I posted a bunch of them because I couldn't choose only a couple. Enjoy! The birthday boy is sleeping. He crashed pretty hard after the mall. Hopefully he sleeps all night and we don't have a repeat of last night. More later....
Birthday Boy!
Happy Birthday, Joel Aiden Jeffrey!! :0) I can't believe he is one already. He must have wanted to not miss a moment of birthday fun....he woke up from midnight to 2:30, from 4:00 until 5:30, and again at 7:00! That's a little rough when you are out of practice! Rob and I are both delirious, I think, but Joel seems to be going strong! He will definitely need a nap (at least one!) today. He gets his one year pictures taken at Sears at 6:00 tonight. At least Rob is going along to try and make him smile this time! If he stays chipper I'm going to try the "bear" shot in a few minutes. We'll see how that goes!

Chunka Love!
The birthday countdown continues! The visiting nurse was here today to give Joel what is hopefully his last RSV prevention shot and she weighed him.....23 pounds, 13 ounces! I've been calling him "Chunky Monkey" all day. The nurse said he is right on target. We hadn't weighed him in a while so I wasn't sure where he was at. That's all for now....More later!

Almost One!
I can't believe Joel will be one in two days! It was one year ago today that I got the first call from Naomi about Courtney, who was supposedly a couple of weeks away from having her baby. Surprise! This year has gone by so fast. I can't believe that the ornery little guy I see now was the same fragile, tiny little angel in the NICU. We had a birthday celebration with Susan, Sarah, and Katie last weekend. We had fun with that! Joel was a little confused, but loved his balloons and his cake. He even got some pizza crust, so it was a big night for him! :0) We have two parties for him this weekend, so we will be "birthday-ed out" by Monday! He is constantly on the go and keeps me busy all day. Today's discoveries: the dryer door (which he beats like a drum) and the toilet paper (which he unrolls with amazing speed and dexterity!). Since he can now escape from his exerciser, there is no peace for Mommy (or Bailey either, for that matter!). The best part is that he wears himself out crawling all over and has been taking nice naps for me. :0) He is getting much better with his balance and can stand for several seconds unsupported. He has been taking a couple of steps around the furniture, but nothing out in the open yet. It won't be long! He has his last RSV prevention shot tomorrow, and sees the doctor next week for his check up. They will be drawing blood at that appointment, so I'm making sure that Daddy goes along! He also gets his one year pictures taken on his actual birthday at 6:00....Daddy is going along for that, too. Friday night is my Grandma's birthday dinner, and his parties are Saturday and Sunday. Boy will we be tired by Sunday night! There has never been a little boy more loved and more treasured by his parents (and everyone else!) and we can't wait to see what the next year brings! I've posted lots of pictures....Enjoy! More later.
