Float Like A Butterfly, Sting Like A Bee.....
What a day! Today I had to take Joel and go to Toledo to get the air conditioning fixed in the van (a whole separate story.....). Anyway, when I finally got there they told me that it would be 5 or 6 hours before it was done. Mercifully they gave me a loaner vehicle for that time, which they don't normally do. (I'm sure the sight of my cranky, sleepy 1-year-old helped that decision along! I'm sure they did not want him in their waiting area that long!) I took him to the mall since I figured that would be where we could waste the most time (too hot for the zoo!). ANYWAY...he was really well-behaved and patient while we were there. We did a lot of walking, and he really wanted out of the stroller. Plus, the air conditioning was not working well at the mall (it must be the theme for the day) and it was really warm in there. At one point I stopped at the "play area" to let him move around a while (I tried desperately not to think about the germs.....uggg.). He was doing well and laughing while he played with some spinning tiles on a wall. Pretty soon a little boy came over and was playing with him, which was fine. HOWEVER...for no apparent reason this little boy hauled off and kicked Joel right in the chest! (He was on his knees.) Before Mommy could intervene, my sweet little angel swung his arm back and smacked the kid right in the face! Then he turned around, looked at me, and burst into tears! Now I don't normally condone violence on the playground, but I have to say I was pretty proud! :0) (Plus, I thought it was better that Joel hit him than Mommy doing it!) I picked up Joel and cuddled him. After that, every time the little boy came around, Joel "yelled" and stuck his arm out. He didn't come too close! :0) My boy doesn't take any guff! At any rate, we got back to Defiance just in time for Joel's last swimming class at the YMCA. :0( He did so well with them. Tonight Rob held on to his legs and pushed him in front of him around the pool. Joel loved it! He drank a lot of pool water, but he was smiling and laughing. I'm not sure if there is another session coming up or not. He got his first certificate for completing the session! We're so proud! (We know we are dorks but we don't care!) We are definitely going to have to find a pool to hang out in this summer! The whole day wore him out.... he fell asleep right after his bath and hasn't moved since we put him in his crib. More later.....

Growing So Fast....
Another successful swimming night! Joel was so funny tonight. I got great video of him in the water with a floating toy, laughing and making funny faces while Rob pushed him through the water. Plus, he really loves jumping into the water from a sitting position on the edge if the pool. Rob can hardly get him to sit there at all...he just flops himself right into Rob's arms! AND he got to play with a ball in the pool with the cute little girl in the class! He loves it so much! Unfortunately next week is the last week of class. We are looking into open pool times so that I can possibly take him sometimes during the day. Also, he is getting better at taking some independent steps, and he can get on and off of his "sit on" toys without any help. He doesn't need me anymore! :0( He's turning into a little boy right before my eyes....no more baby! He now crawls all over the place, pushing his trucks and his little school bus into everything in sight. He has some low frustration tolerance though....when he runs into things he screams and throws a fit! He also stands up on his Gator when Rob pushes him now. The boy has no fear! Also, I checked on him a little bit ago and he was giggling and smiling in his sleep. Absolutely adorable! We love him so much. I thought it was cliche, but I love him more and more every day. I don't know how that is possible! More later...

Making Progress....
Woo Hoo! Joel took two unassisted steps today! I know it isn't much, but darn it, it counts! :0) He has been "walking" on his knees a lot and walking while holding our hands, but not much if any walking alone. I really wanted him to be walking for his next pediatrician appointment on June 22, seeing as how the doctor told us in January that he would probably walk within the month! I'm not in a hurry for him to grow up any quicker, but progress is good! I'm not sure what is up with him tonight. He was generally fussy and had a very short temper all day, which is pretty out of character. He also had multiple messy diapers, so maybe he had a tummy ache or something. Maybe more teeth? I don't know, but hopefully he feels better tomorrow....More later...

Busy, Busy Boy!...
Joel is quite the social butterfly! Yesterday we went to Wauseon in the morning for the Kid's Fishing Derby at the Sportsman's Club with PawPaw and Grandma. We didn't catch any fish, but Joel did touch a worm (YUCK!) and got to have some fun being outdoors and riding with PawPaw on the Gator. We went for lunch and then came home to get ready to go to a wedding reception for my friend Ellie's daughter in Bryan. Unfortunately, there was no napping in between! Joel did crawl around some at the reception and played with my friend Lindsey's little boy, Carter, but for the most part it was too loud, too crowded, and too hot for our little guy. We left after only a couple of hours, came home, took a walk, and went to bed! He slept all night (fourth night in a row!) and I got up with him at 6:45. He stayed awake, so Mom got lots of work done early! He went next door to play with Baby Jayden for a little while this afternoon while I planted some flowers. Jayden's mom was happy to have two little guys instead of one for a while! Joel has now been sleeping for 2 hours, so I need to go get him up soon. I hear him in there, but he's happy. This morning was wonderful. After being up for an hour or so, I got Joel dressed and we went in to our room looking for Daddy. Rob and Joel played for a while on the bed, and then I laid down with them. Joel was a little cranky, so Rob started stroking his head and his cheek and I rubbed his belly. His little eyes rolled back and he fell asleep pretty quickly. That's the first time he has done that! I slept with him for about an hour while Rob had his breakfast and watched the news. Rob came back to snuggle, but Bailey jumped on the bed, woke Joel up, and chaos ensued! It was so nice while it lasted to lay there and snuggle him while he slept. Hopefully there is more of that in our future! More later....

Little Swimmer....
Joel continues to do well with his swimming lessons. Tonight he started kicking his feet in the water. He was also trying to blow bubbles with Rob, but he ended up with several mouthfuls of pool water and was done with that! He will also lean into the pool into Rob's arms if he is sitting on the edge. The boy has no fear! He is so much fun to watch! I have videotape, so sometime I will have to share that. Swimming wears him out, so he is sleeping better through the night. More later...

Swimming lessons...Part 2...
Tonight was Joel's second swimming lesson. He still enjoyed the water a lot, and got really excited when he saw his swim trunks come out of the drawer! He was a little more subdued tonight, though, because he didn't have a nap today and was really tired. He fell asleep about 3 minutes after getting back into his car seat! Tonight they had the kids use a floating stick-looking thing to see if they would hold on with both hands. Joel did it! He has yet to cry in the pool, even when Daddy keeps dunking him! He looks so cute floating around the pool holding on to the float toy! Of course, Daddy has a hold of him still, but he really thinks he's doing something big! No more lessons until Tuesday. More later.....

Swimming lessons.....
Tonight was Joel's first swimming lesson with Daddy at the Y. He did really well! He was excited as soon as we got to the pool, and was really watching the people in the water. I was worried because he had not taken much of a nap today and he was yawning when we left home, but he perked up right away. Rob said he was a little apprehensive when he first jumped into the water with him, but he did not cry or fuss at all. Them Daddy dunked him! He came up sputtering and gasping but again didn't cry or get upset. Joel is the youngest in his class by far (they are known as the "shrimp" class....). There were about 5 kids and the next oldest is probably over 2. Some of the kids did not want to get into the pool or splash, but not Joel! He put his face in the water, too. He held on to Rob pretty tightly, but liked it when Rob moved through the water and "swooshed" him around. Tonight was kind of just to get the kids into the pool, I think, because there was not much instruction. One of the goals on the paper they gave us was to get the kids to blow bubbles. I think we have a ways to go on that one! :0) We were so proud watching Joel tonight. He is growing up so fast! Hopefully the next lesson goes as well as tonight. I would love to have him enjoy the water. So far, so good! Enjoy the pictures.....

Joel's First Vacation
Last week we went to Tennessee with my family for five days in Gatlinburg. This was Joel's first vacation, and he was wonderful! He travelled really well and hardly fussed at all in the car on the way there. Thank goodness Daddy insisted on buying the portable DVD player for the car.....it was a Godsend! We took him to Ober Gatlinburg and the Dixie Stampede. He really liked the animals at Ober Gatlinburg, but I think he was a tad overstimulated at the Dixie Stampede. He was a trooper, though! One day we took a bad detour and spent 10 hours in the car. He was better about that than his Mommy was! On our last full day there, my friend Megan who lives there came and babysat for Joel while we went to the new Titanic museum. She loves spoiling him and he loves being spoiled so it worked out well! We took tons of pictures, and I have posted a few of the good ones here. On the way home, Joel was not quite as cooperative and fussed quite a bit the last couple of hours. I couldn't blame him though. He is such an easy-going little guy and very flexible it seems. Maybe we'll do another trip next year.....? Anyway, Joel is doing great in general. He is not yet walking alone but does stand and walk if you hold his hand. It won't be long before he is off and running! He is very vocal and very, VERY busy all day....crawling around and getting into everything he can possibly find. He keeps us busy! We are all definitely ready for bed at night! We fall in love with him more every day, and we have to try really hard not to spoil him completely rotten. He fell asleep on Rob tonight, and went to bed without any trouble, so that was a beautiful thing. More later....Oops...I almost forgot. Joel starts his "swimming lessons" with Daddy at the YMCA this coming week. I'm going aong as the offical photographer. We can't wait!
